Just Hangin’ Out

Here is a perfect example of why you shouldn’t be a drug-runner. Notice that the guy in the foreground in the first shot defecated. Maybe as his head was being removed. Maybe before they did it as I’d imagine he was scared to death. And finally, maybe it happened post-mortem. Whatever the cause, this guy lost all dignity.

Mexico Gore

Unlike in the states, Mexico does not suffer from excessive censorship. While most mainstream periodicals here in Mexico adhere to some sort of limit and moral center, a few papers do not. Fortunately for me, this attitude to promote and spread sensationalism provides a constant stream of material for my sick little blog.

Here are the latest examples from The Metro:

Movies in Mexico

Since arriving in mexico early on in July, I have had some time to watch some films. I was down here a month without the wife and kids so watching movies was really the only thing to do in the evenings. Here’s a list of what I watched:

Unrest – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0453533/ this is an interesting film about some med school students who are provided a cadaver for dissection that has some unfinished business.

Altered – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0457275/ a cool alien flick with lots of gore.

The Collector – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0844479/ a strange film but a fun 90 minutes gore factor is what saves it.

Paranormal activity – http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1179904/ not really impressed. It was kind of scary and was a good idea but really…Blair witch already covered it. See it just to say you saw it.

I am not writing reviews for these but they are all worth a view. Altered was my favorite but again, you should see them all.

Movie Review – HOUSE OF 1,000 CORPSES

House of 1000 Corpses, 2003, R (Overall grade – 2.0 out of 5 stars)

Not impressed…at all.  I was really looking forward to this one since seeing Devil’s Rejects.  This movie was a novelty.  Seemed like an excuse to be over-the-top in every aspect from acting, scenes to even the editing.  I will say this, Captain Spaulding is a great character…probably the movie’s only saving grace.  I was surprised to see Rainn Wilson in this flick and oddly enough, his demise is the most entertaining.  This might sound strange, but the “Crazies” in this movie were just too crazy.  Too much, Rob…too much!  They were not believable – at all.  The murder/torture scenes are blurred by weird cinematography effects and frankly, it loses it’s terror and darkness.  They stole a page from the Silence of the Lambs script where the face is removed and worn as a mask…although, it’s kind of a cool scene.  Now, the end….hmmmm.  What to say here.  Oh yeah…LAME!  What the hell is up with the “well” people?  Who are they?  Where did they come from?  And this whole Dr. Satan thing?  Just strange and not really all that scary….at all.  I was disappointed.  This movie was not good so I would recommend you just skip it and go to the sequel, “Devil’s Rejects“.  That movie is much better and it has Priscilla Barnes from Three’s Company in it!

Movie Review – ANTICHRIST

Antichrist, 2009, NR (Overall Grade 4.0 out of 5 stars)

Note – this film is #10 on the list of the 10 all-time most controversial horror films ever made (bloody-disgusting.com) – http://feastingonroadkill.com/site/?p=157

This is perhaps one of the most disturbing cinematic events I have ever witnessed.  Shocking, brutal and savage only begin to describe the scenes in this film.  But, don’t let that introduction deter you.  If you are a true horror fan and are able to look past gore or violence to see the message or how it supports the story/plot or message of the film, then this film will be a treat!  I will say this: I am a seasoned horror fan…it takes A LOT to freak me out or make me cringe.  This movie did both…multiple times!  It’s hard to provide a synopsis of the plot without ruining the tone and effect of the film.  However, a brief summary would be appropriate:

A couple, while in a passionate exchange, do not notice their son get out of bed and fall to his death out of a window.  The wife becomes physically ill with grief and is hospitalized.  The husband is a therapist.  The film is a sort of narrative for the wife’s struggle with grief as the husband takes on a therapist role.  They retreat to a family cabin in the woods.  As the “therapy” progresses and the reality of the situation evolves, the darkness that is the true source of the catalyst (child’s death), becomes apparent.  Nature and the past play important sub-roles to the grief and despair that has consumed them both.

It is a cerebral film so don’t expect thrills and chills at every corner.  Expect to think and to be immersed in a journey of tragedy, deception, rage and despair.  There are several key scenes that will leave you completely speechless and shocked.  Period.  The acting is stellar and the actors do a great job of embracing the roles and delivering the intensity required for such a piece.  Willem Dafoe delivers a tortured performance.  Opposite him, Charlotte Gainsbourg is equally as effective.

I would advise anyone who is doubtful they can handle the film to refernce this guide to review some of the scenes.  It has “rollover” sections for spoilers in case you want to know:

Movie Review – DEAD SNOW

Dead Snow, 2009, R (Overall Grade 4.0 out of 5 stars)

Hands down, one of the best horror movies I’ve seen. This is right up there with Devil’s Rejects.  I won’t spoil this one by giving a synopsis but I can say that the film is fun, bloody, humorous, outrageous and just down-right good!  The effects are great!  The zombies are top-notch and of course, the young crowd of actors adds just the right amount of color and comic-relief.  The film is Norwegian so there are subtitles, but that doesn’t take away from the film in any way.  Production quality is very good and the acting is above-average..especially for a horror film.  The death scenes are extremely creative and the snow makes a great contrasting backdrop for the blood that flows heavily in most scenes.

I highly recommend this one.  It’s foreign and it’s horror!  So, support your local Scandinavian film team and go see this!  Rent it or stream it on Netflix (R).

Movie Review – IT’S ALIVE!

It’s Alive 2008, NR (Overall grade – 1.0 out of 5 stars)  IMDB Link

Barnacle – 1.0 out of 5 stars-  Ok, ok. The baby thing has been done.  Right?  Kids always make movies more creepy.  Gage from Pet Semetary, Girl from Exorcist and Rosemary’s baby to name a few.  This film stoops to new lows.  It’s a gratuitous gore-fest with the source of the carnage being a baby…and I mean…baby.  An infant.   The kid starts murdering as soon as it’s plucked from the womb.

Synopsis: College student gets knocked up and attempts to abort the child with miscarriage pills.  The pills fail and the kid survives.  Student leaves college to have the kid..at 6months along the kids wants out.  To the hospital they go, C-section time.  As soon as the baby is pulled from the belly of mom, it kills the Dr. and all the nurses.  Baby gets taken home and starts eating rodents and birds.  Then turns to humans that happen to visit the home.  Kid’s appetite is insatiable and soon anyone that crosses its path becomes dinner.

The murder scenes are great actually – lots of blood spraying and biting.  The kid actually eats it’s way through its victims.  There are a few scenes that are worth noting.  1) Cop gets ambushed from behind and the kid eats her from the legs up. 2) Girl gets pulled into the back of a truck and the kid punches through the back of her head and it comes out of her mouth!

Verdict:  Don’t bother.  Well, unless murdering infants are your thing.  Don’t watch it with your mom or your pregnant wife.  Oh, and put the kids to bed before throwing it on.
